An Lanntair presents Clàr/Platform, an exciting new springboard opportunity for young creatives in Lewis and Harris interested in getting into film and music production.

Supported by the Youth Arts Access Fund through Creative Scotland, and open to islanders aged 14-25 years, this new multimedia project delivers the chance to learn new skills from experienced professionals in the creative industries, including camera operators and DJs, as participants explore film, streaming, content creation, production skills, and event organisation.

The new ‘team’ of young creatives will film, record, and produce and broadcast a regular arts and music programme, showcasing the work of talented local artists, as well as delve into issues and ideas relevant and important to today’s young islanders.

Multimedia artist and An Lanntair Arts Worker Robbie Thomson will lead the weekly Clàr sessions, which start on Wednesday April 14, initially via Zoom with face-to-face group sessions anticipated when restrictions allow.

Robbie said: “I’m really excited to get up and running with Clàr/Platform. We want to create a space where creative young people who are interested in working with digital artforms can come and collaborate, learn skills, and showcase their talents.

“I’m interested to see the ideas emerge and for people to follow their instincts about the kinds of content that we create. It’s a blank canvas for folk to experiment with, but we have an experienced team to help support and guide things along. I hope we will have a real collective atmosphere and that people can find their voices and mediums within the project.”

With participant’s ideas at the centre of the work created, Clàr will be looking at a variety of digital multimedia topics such as the recording of live gigs and exhibitions; interviewing artists and musicians; presenting and performing in front of the camera; curating and producing live events in An Lanntair, and script development, pre-production, and planning sessions.

There will also be masterclasses and shadowing from camera operators, sound engineers and lighting designers; dedicated electronic music tuition from practising musicians and DJs; and participants will experiment with platforms like Arduino and Teensy, as well as using creative software such as Ableton, Photoshop, Premier Pro, Touchdesigner, and Fusion 360.
