New work commissions for young Hebridean Creatives

Clàr Commission 2024

An Lanntair’s creative workshop programme for 14-25 year olds, Clàr, has announced 2x £1500 commissions for a visual artist and a musician to create new works as part of our 23/24 programme. The successful applicants are vocalist Iona Mairead Davidson from Lewis and visual artist Calum Ferguson from North Uist. Course leader Robbie Thomson says:

We were really impressed by the quality of the proposals this year and I’m excited to see the results of Calum and Iona’s projects as they develop into 2024. Both are at a pivotal point in their careers as emerging talents and alongside their fees we will support them with mentoring from creative professionals and opportunities to show their work”

Calum graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2021, his project will bring together archival and environmental recordings about Gaidhlig weather-lore with sculptural forms that entice interaction from the audience. His proposal includes devolping bio-plastics from local seaweed to create an installation that encourages engagement with Gaidhlig language, culture and the surrounding environment.

Iona is a vocalist who has previously featured in 2023’s Heb Women concert, she has been gaining experience of performing locally and was awarded a place in Wee Studio’s ‘Clàradh san Sgòth’ project in 2021, where she spent 2 days recording. Her music fuses traditional Gàidhlig song with contemporary productions and her project will see the development and release of her first album.
